The necklaces consist of various beads – round
and bipyramidal from sard, flat from
mother-of-pearl and lazurite, faceted rock crystal,
and silver and gilt glass beads. Such ornaments
were widely found in Ancient Rus and necklaces
like this have been found in 11th-century Slavonic
burials at the settlement of Belaya Vezha.
In 965, the Russian Prince Svyatoslav captured
the Khazar fortress of Sarkel and renamed it
Belaya Vezha.
