Moonrise
Caspar David Friedrich,
1774-1840
1835-1837
Sepia wash over a pencil sketch, bordered with Indian ink
24.5 x 34.5 cm
Two men in long cloaks and large berets contemplate the beauty of the landscape before them. The disk of the moon hangs above the sea, which is
submerged in twilight, its calm surface reflecting the moon's bright light. In the foreground is a stony shore, while the men's figures seem small and lonely.
Such contemplation of Nature, and a burning sense of its meaning and rhythm, are dominant features in the aesthetic outlook of this German Romantic
painter.
