Symposium "Examination and Attribution of Works of Fine and Applied
Arts"
On June 27, 2000 Director of the State Hermitage Museum Mikhail Piotrovsky
addressed the participants of the symposium at the opening ceremony held
in the Hermitage Theatre. The meetings of scientists joined up specialists
from the Moscow State University, the State Museum of Fine Arts named
after Alexander Pushkin, the State Tretiakov Gallery, the State Museum
of History, the All-Russian Museum of Applied and Folk Arts (Moscow),
the State Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg) and scientific research
centres and museums from towns of Russia, CIS and Baltic republics. The
first day of the symposium was devoted to the methodological problems
of attribution of works of arts. Participants also discussed physical
and chemical methods of examination, the role of X-ray tests in the complex
of pre-restoration examination of works of art. Problems of scientific-technical
examination also became the subject for discussion.
